This hike is a self guided nature trail, and is wheelchair accessible.  The trailhead is located on the Going to the Sun Road at the Avanlanche Creek Picnic area.  This is one of the most popular areas of the park and the parking lot fills up quickly.  During the summer, the Glacier shuttle might be the best way to get there.

The trail starts on the north side of Avalanche creek as a board walk.  There are a number of benches and places to stop, as you wind your way through the forest.  This area has been relatively free of avalanches and fires, so the trees are older and resemble the rain forests of the Pacific Northwest.  The far end of the loop terminates at Avalanche Gorge, where Avalanche creek has carved out a slot canyon.  There is a junction here.  You can head up the trail 2 miles to Avalanche Lake.  Or the paved trail takes you back down the trailhead.
